CSIP-AUS v1.3 released to support the next phase of DER integration

Price signals, energy storage control and version negotiation come to Australia's DER communications protocol.

The DER Integration API Technical Working Group (DERIAPITWG) has published CSIP-AUS v1.3 and its accompanying Test Procedures, introducing new capabilities that support the evolving role of distributed energy resources (DER) in Australia’s energy system.

CSIP-AUS is an Australian implementation profile of IEEE 2030.5, providing a common way for utilities and distributed energy resources to communicate. Version 1.2 forms the basis of dynamic operating envelopes and emergency backstop arrangements currently being adopted across several jurisdictions.

The new v1.3 release introduces three optional, backwards-compatible capabilities covering:

  • Pricing – enabling a standardised approach for communicating dynamic price signals to DER.

  • Storage – supporting the management of battery storage assets to respond to changing network conditions.

  • Service discovery and version negotiation – improving interoperability between systems as new CSIP-AUS versions are adopted.

The enhancements expand the range of use cases supported by CSIP-AUS, helping unlock greater value from distributed energy resources while supporting a more flexible and interoperable energy system.

The v1.3 release does not alter existing standards, jurisdictional requirements, or previous certification outcomes.

How does v1.3 fit with TS 5573?

The publication of CSIP-AUS v1.3 does not change SA TS 5573:2025, its test cases, nor the jurisdictional requirements that stem from that standard. It also does not invalidate the implementations of SA TS 5573 test cases in CACTUS. All test executions performed to date remain valid.

Utilities that are adopting the CSIP-AUS v1.3 functionality for specific programs or pilots will communicate the timing, adoption and transition arrangements in due course.

Clients that have been tested and listed for SA TS 5573 testing profiles can continue to interact with v1.3 servers with no changes.
